Tephra Workshop: Stronger Together in the Mediterranean
23-25th April 2025 – GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany
The Commission on Tephrochronology (COT) was pleased to co-sponsor the Tephra Workshop: Stronger Together in the Mediterranean, held at GEOMAR, Kiel Germany. The April 2025 workshop was organised by Julie Belo (GEOMAR), Steffen Kutterolf (GEOMAR) and Paul Albert (Swansea University), and was financially supported by GEOMAR, the DFG, and UKRI. The workshop brought together more than 45 researchers, and welcomed a large number of early career researchers, including PhD students. The two and half days comprised of research talks, poster presentations, and breakout sessions. The tephrochronological talks and posters ranged from those focused on the central Mediterranean (Italian volcanism) to those relating to the eastern Mediterranean (Aegean and Anatolian volcanism), while there was a particular focus upon the latest Hellenic Arc tephra research emanating from the IODP 398 Expedition. The breakout sessions concentrated on key themes including; Geochronology (led Bjarne Friedrichs [University of Salzburg] and Sarah Beethe [Oregon State University]); Geophysics (led Jens Karstens [GEOMAR]); Cryptotephra (led Paul Albert); and Petrology (led Sue DeBari [Western Washington University). Many thanks to our colleagues at GEOMAR for hosting an excellent meeting.
